This Jewelry class is for the novice who has never touched metal and wants to create a fabulous piece of art to wear. What is a fibula? It is a brooch or pin used for fastening garments. The origins are ancient, dating back to the Greeks and Romans with a recent resurgence featured on the popular shows, Game of Thrones and Lord of the Rings. I will provide all the tools needed to work in class. Each student will pay an additional materials fee of $35. which will be used to purchase the metal wire ( silver copper and brass) and beads used. Other objects that you have can be incorporated into the finished piece.
I am a working metalsmith who designs jewelry using silver, fused glass, and pearls. I often use found objects that I collect during my travels. My art is influenced by nature and the sea, telling the stories of places and people I have met in my travels. You can find my work on my Facebook Page: @Flowing with Pearls. I have been an exhibiting artist since 1978, doing travelling art shows from Massachusetts to Florida, and exhibiting in galleries and museums across the United States. My work has won many awards and is in countless private collections.
I have developed and written the middle school competency-based art curriculum for the State of Florida. I have taught both 2D and 3D art in public and private schools and to art educators at conferences and professional development seminars in New York and Florida for the past 41 years. I was teacher of the year at Glades Middle in 1994 and 2018. I was Middle School Art Educator of the Year for the State of Florida in 2008 and Top Art Educator for the State of Florida in 2016, South Eastern United States Art Educator in 2017, and a DAEA Sipes Award winner, and FAEA Distinguished Service Award winner in 2019. I have been an adjudicator for countless art exhibitions, featuring the art work of students, professional artists, and art educators.
